Podcast CPD for Canadian CPAs: How LumiQ Works

Canadian CPAs can earn verifiable CPD by listening to podcasts, provided the activity is relevant to their professional responsibilities and there is independent, third-party evidence of completion such as a certificate issued after a post-episode quiz documenting the provider, date, title, and hours.

LumiQ is purpose built to qualify as verifiable CPD in every Canadian province or territory. While your provincial or territorial CPA body has the final say on what counts, we have more than 1,200 professionally produced episodes, each with chapter based quizzes to evidence your understanding, with the hours recorded in your Tracker and a certificate of completion for your records. Our wide range of current topics, expert talent and approach makes it easy to find content that not only meets the requirements for compliance, but exceeds them, becoming truly interesting and useful learning that stays with you after compliance season ends.

Read on to learn how podcasts can become a valuable part of your professional development this year.

How Do You Earn CPD Through a LumiQ Podcast?

1. Choose an Episode

Browse LumiQ's library through Discover, Learning Paths, Categories or Technical Search. Each episode page shows the subject, learning objectives and the CPD hours available before you press play.

LumiQ offers more than 1,200 episodes covering accounting, audit and assurance, tax, ethics, fraud, finance, artificial intelligence, technology, internal audit, leadership and professional development, with new episodes released weekly.

2. Listen Through the Web or Mobile App

Listen through LumiQ's web platform or mobile app for iOS or Android, with adjustable playback speed. The audio-first format lets you fit professional development into commuting, travelling, walking, exercising or other parts of your day that do not suit a scheduled webinar.

Mobile users can download episodes in advance and listen without Wi-Fi or mobile data.

3. Complete the Chapter Quizzes

Each LumiQ episode is divided into chapters, with quiz questions designed to reinforce the material and check your understanding. A chapter's quiz unlocks once you have listened to that chapter; for Canadian CPD users, listening is required, not optional.

As you finish each chapter and answer its quiz questions correctly, you earn the CPD hours assigned to that chapter. You don't need to complete an entire episode to earn CPD. Your hours are awarded progressively as you complete chapters and their quizzes. You can return to an episode later to complete the remaining chapters and continue earning CPD.

4. Track Your CPD Progress

LumiQ automatically records the CPD hours you earn as you progress through an episode, shows which chapters you have completed and flags any outstanding quizzes, so you can pick up where you left off.

5. Download Your Certificate from the Tracker

LumiQ automatically creates a certificate of completion once an episode chapter and its quiz are finished. This certificate is saved directly in your Tracker, allowing you to download it easily for your professional development documentation.

The Tracker also lets you organize your CPD history, add external learning activities, upload supporting certificates and export your records.

What Makes a Podcast Eligible for Verifiable CPD?

Not every podcast automatically qualifies as verifiable CPD.

The provincial CPA bodies generally focus on the evidence. CPA Ontario counts hours as verifiable "if you have acceptable documentation to support the professional development hours", and lists "self-study that does not involve an exam" among unverifiable activities. CPABC is explicit about online learning: "computer-based learning activities that involve the successful completion of an examination or certification" are verifiable, while "self-study that does not involve the successful completion of an examination or certification", including webinars, is not.

That is why a LumiQ episode is more than a podcast you happen to learn from. The chapter quizzes and the certificate are what turn listening into verifiable CPD.

LumiQ supports these requirements through:

  • Defined learning objectives
  • Structured, chapter-based learning
  • Quiz questions that reinforce key concepts
  • Automatic tracking of completed CPD hours
  • Certificates of completion
  • Transcripts and additional learning resources where available

These features help Canadian CPAs document their learning and maintain records for their professional body.

Does LumiQ Count as Verifiable CPD Across Canada?

LumiQ provides structured learning and completion documentation that can support verifiable CPD for Canadian CPAs across provinces and territories. Essentially, LumiQ provides the learning and completion evidence and your provincial or territorial CPA body is the authority on CPD acceptance.

Fortunately, the requirements for verifiable CPD are harmonized across most provincial bodies. Specifically, CPA Ontario, CPABC and CPA Alberta each require 120 hours of CPD in every rolling three-year period, of which at least 60 must be verifiable, with a minimum of 20 hours each year, at least 10 of them verifiable, and at least four verifiable hours of professional ethics in each three-year period. The Ordre des CPA du Québec works differently. It counts structured training rather than verifiable hours, and requires 120 hours per fixed three-year period (currently 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2028) with at least 25 hours a year, including four hours of structured ethics training. For distance learning, members must be able to prove they completed the activity, and where it includes a knowledge evaluation they need a mark of at least 60 percent.

Members are responsible for determining whether an activity is relevant to their professional responsibilities and meets their applicable reporting obligations. When selecting a podcast for CPD purposes, consider whether it:

  • Develops or maintains competencies relevant to your role
  • Meets any applicable subject-specific requirements
  • Falls within the appropriate reporting period
  • Provides the documentation needed for your CPD records
  • Supports your ongoing professional competence

Note that each provincial or territorial CPA body establishes its own CPD requirements and

How Are Podcast CPD Hours Calculated?

Canadian CPD is recorded in hours of qualifying professional development activity.

LumiQ displays the CPD time available for each episode, in minutes, on the episode page, and tracks the hours earned as chapters and their quizzes are completed. This means you can earn CPD progressively without completing the entire episode.

The number of hours available varies by episode. Members should record their learning according to the requirements of their provincial or territorial CPA body.

Can I Earn CPD While Listening Offline?

Yes. LumiQ's mobile apps let you download episodes while connected to the internet and listen later without Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Offline listening is useful during:

  • Flights and train journeys
  • Daily commutes
  • Travel
  • Walks and workouts
  • Areas with unreliable internet access

Your learning remains connected to your LumiQ account, and your earned CPD is tracked through the platform.

Can Podcast CPD Satisfy a Professional Ethics Requirement?

Yes, when the episode is a professional ethics episode. Ethics episodes are included in every LumiQ plan and are tagged "Ethics" in the library; hours earned on the free trial do not count toward ethics.

LumiQ offers episodes on professional judgment, integrity, conflicts of interest, ethical decision-making, governance and other ethics-related subjects.

CPA Ontario, CPABC and CPA Alberta each require at least four verifiable hours of professional ethics in every rolling three-year period, and the Ordre des CPA du Québec requires four hours of structured ethics training per three-year period. Each body decides what qualifies, so confirm the classification with your provincial or territorial body.

Before recording an episode toward an ethics requirement, review its learning objectives and content to ensure it addresses the relevant professional ethics competencies.

What Information Appears on a LumiQ CPD Certificate?

A LumiQ certificate of completion documents the professional learning activity and includes:

  • Participant name
  • Course title
  • Completion date
  • CPD hours earned
  • Relevant course information

Certificates provide supporting evidence of completed learning and can be retained for CPD reporting and audit purposes. CPABC asks that documentation describe the activity, identify the provider, connect the member to it, show when it took place and support the hours claimed, and CPA Ontario, CPABC and CPA Alberta all require members to keep CPD records for at least five years.

LumiQ stores certificates in the Tracker, making them accessible whenever you need to review or download your records.

What Is the LumiQ Tracker?

The LumiQ Tracker is a central place to organize your professional development records. As you complete LumiQ learning activities, your earned CPD and certificates are recorded automatically, and the Canadian view shows your current three-year rolling cycle with separate progress bars for total hours and ethics hours.

You can also:

  • Add external CPD activities
  • Upload supporting certificates
  • Filter your learning history
  • Export CPD records
  • Access previously earned certificates after a paid subscription ends

The Tracker is a recordkeeping tool. It does not independently determine whether a course satisfies an individual CPA body's requirements.

Why Choose Podcast CPD?

Podcast CPD makes professional development easier to fit into a busy schedule. Rather than requiring a scheduled session or additional time in front of a screen, LumiQ lets you learn through professionally produced conversations, real-world case studies and expert perspectives.

Episodes feature CFOs, accounting and assurance partners, regulators, authors, finance leaders and other experienced practitioners discussing practical challenges and developments shaping the profession.

LumiQ is audio-first, not audio-only. Episodes include transcripts, while selected courses offer visual aids, downloadable workbooks or other supporting materials.

Podcast CPD is particularly useful if you:

  • Prefer listening to watching
  • Want flexible, on-demand learning
  • Need mobile or offline access
  • Learn well through conversations and practical examples
  • Want to complete CPD throughout the year
  • Value structured learning with documented completion

Podcast CPD is not the right format for every topic or learner. It complements webinars, technical courses, conferences and employer-led professional development rather than replacing them.
