Common questions about CIA CPE Courses.
Try LumiQ for freeThe Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) sets CIA continuing education requirements globally, and the IIA refers to these as CPE hours. Practicing CIAs must complete 40 CPE hours per year, while nonpracticing CIAs must complete 20 CPE hours per year. Of these hours, a minimum of 2 CPE hours per year must be in ethics, regardless of practicing status.
Note that in the UK, the Chartered IIA (IIA UK & Ireland) also uses the term "CPE," not "CPD," in its official policy. CIA holders who also hold a Chartered IIA designation (such as PIIA, CMIIA, or QICA) report their 40 hours to IIA Global only, with no separate Chartered IIA submission required. Because requirements may change, CIA holders in the UK are responsible for confirming current requirements with the IIA and, where relevant, the Chartered IIA.
The IIA Global reporting period runs January 1 through December 31, with renewal opening October 1. CPE hours must be earned and reported by December 31 through the IIA's Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS). Missing the deadline moves a holder into Grace status for up to two years, during which the CIA designation and its benefits cannot be claimed until the required CPE is reported. Failing to report for a full three-year period results in Revoked status, requiring full recertification.
Note that the Chartered IIA's own CPE policy (which applies to its separate UK & Ireland designations, not to CIA reporting) runs on a different cycle, April 1 through March 31. CIA holders should confirm the applicable deadline for any UK-specific designation they hold with the Chartered IIA directly.
The IIA's renewal policy explicitly accepts formal self-study and correspondence programs relevant to internal auditing, provided the program builds professional competence, states clear objectives, is developed by qualified experts, offers current content, and provides evidence of completion.
Importantly, the IIA does not prequalify CPE providers or activities for CIA renewal. CIA holders self-attest that a given learning activity meets the IIA's Certification Renewal Policy guidelines and are responsible for retaining documentation for at least three years in case of an audit. LumiQ is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a CPE sponsor (Sponsor ID: 146039) and its courses meet verifiable CPD requirements for accounting and finance professionals in the UK; CIA holders should still confirm that a specific LumiQ course meets the IIA's (and, where applicable, the Chartered IIA's) qualifying-activity criteria before applying credit toward their CIA renewal.
CIA CPE courses commonly cover topics such as:
• Enterprise risk management and internal audit strategy
• Internal controls testing and the COSO framework
• Governance, audit committees, and board oversight
• Fraud risk, forensic considerations, and behavioral ethics
• Cybersecurity governance and upskilling internal audit teams
Podcasts can deliver superior learning outcomes compared to live webinars and recorded webcasts. Audio-only formats reduce cognitive overload and "Zoom fatigue," allowing your brain to retain information better. Additionally, unlike live or in-person options, you can pause and replay complex internal audit concepts as needed for comprehension.
Podcasts also fit your schedule and your life better. Unlike live webinars with fixed start times, podcasts let you earn hours during your commute, between engagements, or whenever works best.
In short, you get the same hours with better retention and zero scheduling conflicts.
CPE/CPD credits vary by course. Typically they range from 1 to 2 hours per podcast and 3 to 9 hours for our in-depth, multi-episode learning paths. Each course listing clearly displays the credits you'll earn upon completion. All credits are earned once you complete the podcast episode in full and pass the final assessment.
LumiQ courses meet verifiable CPD and CPE requirements for accounting and finance professionals in the UK. That said, the IIA does not prequalify providers or activities for CIA renewal; CIA holders self-attest that their learning activities meet the IIA's Certification Renewal Policy guidelines. Your certificate of completion documents the learning activity and hours earned, and CIA holders are responsible for confirming that a specific course qualifies toward their CIA CPE requirement (and any separate Chartered IIA requirement, if applicable).
