CPD is mandatory for all CIMA members. Rather than prescribing a fixed number of hours, CIMA's scheme is outcome-based: members must keep learning throughout their career, work through the CIMA Professional Development Cycle at least once a year, and keep a record of their learning activities.
Because the scheme focuses on the quality and relevance of development rather than an hours target, the right amount of CPD depends on your role and goals. Confirm current requirements with AICPA & CIMA.
The CIMA Professional Development Cycle has six steps: define your current and desired roles, assess your development needs using the CGMA Competency Framework, design your development plan, act on it, reflect on and document the outcomes, and evaluate progress against your objectives, carrying any outstanding development into the next cycle.
CIMA selects a random sample of members' CPD records for monitoring each year. Selected members submit their record using the CIMA Professional Development Record Form, or confirm they work for an accredited employer such as a Premier Partner or CIMA Development Quality Partner, whose appraisal and personal development processes count as evidence. Failing to provide adequate records by the specified date can lead to a financial penalty and possible disciplinary action under Regulation 18A.
Yes. CPD monitoring applies to members employed in business and members in practice alike. Members who hold both roles record development needs for both, and the same cycle-based approach applies across roles.
CIMA accepts both formal learning, such as courses and conferences, and informal learning, such as reading articles, giving presentations, or training a colleague. A podcast-based course with a defined learning objective, quiz questions, and a certificate of completion fits naturally within the CPD cycle and gives you a documented record of the activity.
Members are responsible for choosing development activities that address the needs identified in their own CPD cycle.
LumiQ courses meet verifiable CPD requirements for accounting and finance professionals worldwide, including the UK. Every course contains chapter quizzes and a downloadable certificate of completion, which provides objective, corroborated evidence ready to include in your CIMA Professional Development Record if your CPD is selected for monitoring.
Because CIMA's scheme is built around each member's own development needs, members should confirm that a specific course supports the objectives in their CPD plan.
Podcasts can deliver superior learning outcomes compared to live webinars and recorded webcasts. Audio-only formats reduce cognitive overload and "Zoom fatigue," allowing your brain to retain information better. Additionally, unlike live or in-person options, you can pause and replay complex finance concepts as needed for comprehension.
Podcasts also fit your schedule and your life better. Unlike live webinars with fixed start times, podcasts let you earn CPD during your commute, between clients, or whenever works best.
In short, you get the same credit hours with better retention and zero scheduling conflicts.
CPD units or hours vary by course. Typically they range from 1 to 2 hours per podcast and 3 to 9 hours for our in-depth, multi-episode learning paths. Each course listing clearly displays the hours you'll earn upon completion. All hours are earned once you complete the podcast episode and chapter quizzes in full.
