Common questions about CMA CPE.
Try LumiQ for freeCMAs must complete 30 CPE hours per calendar year to maintain their certification, and at least 2 of those hours must be on the topic of ethics each year. The reporting year runs on a calendar-year basis (January 1 through December 31), and the requirement begins at the start of the calendar year once certification is issued, so your first partial year carries no CPE obligation. Requirements may change, so confirm current rules directly with IMA.
Yes. If you complete more than 30 CPE hours in a calendar year, you may carry the excess into the following year, up to a cap of 10 hours. Confirm the current carryover rules with IMA before relying on carried-over hours.
CPE or dues delinquency disqualifies a CMA from active, good-standing status, and the designation cannot be used until the deficiency is remedied. To remedy delinquency, you generally must pay current dues and fulfill your CPE deficiency, which includes the current year's 30-hour requirement plus any prior shortfall. If the deficiency is not resolved within a year, 60 CPE hours are required the following year, and remedies are capped at a two-year window. Retired CMAs can request an exemption, and hardship waivers (for military service, serious illness or disability, or severe financial hardship) are considered case by case. Confirm your specific situation with IMA.
Qualifying CPE includes educational programs from organizations registered with NASBA, courses and seminars from accredited colleges and universities, and self-study materials or lectures covering topics in IMA's Management Accounting Competency Framework. Other qualifying activities include passing other designation exams, trade-association meetings and seminars, technical publications, college teaching, speaking engagements, and authoring articles for Strategic Finance magazine. Self-study is explicitly recognized as a qualifying format, and one CPE credit generally equals 50 minutes of training. IMA itself is registered with NASBA as a CPE sponsor (National Registry Sponsor ID 103004), in addition to recognizing programs from other NASBA-registered sponsors. Confirm specifics with IMA, since requirements may change.
LumiQ is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a CPE sponsor (Sponsor ID: 146039) offering QAS self-study courses. IMA's own rules state that educational programs from NASBA-registered organizations qualify for CMA CPE. Podcast-format courses specifically are not named as a category on IMA's published CPE rules, so this is subject to IMA's CPE policy, and CMAs are responsible for confirming with IMA that a specific LumiQ course meets their individual requirements before relying on it. LumiQ is not itself an accrediting body for the CMA and cannot certify eligibility on IMA's behalf.
Podcasts can deliver superior learning outcomes compared to live webinars and recorded webcasts. Audio-only formats reduce cognitive overload and "Zoom fatigue," allowing your brain to retain information better. Additionally, unlike live or in-person options, you can pause and replay complex FP&A and strategy concepts as needed for comprehension.
Podcasts also fit your schedule and your life better. Unlike live webinars with fixed start times, podcasts let you earn CPE during your commute, between meetings, or whenever works best.
In short, you get the same credit hours with better retention and zero scheduling conflicts.
CPE credits vary by course. Typically they range from 1 to 2 hours per podcast and 3 to 9 hours for our in-depth, multi-episode learning paths. Each course listing clearly displays the credits you'll earn upon completion. All credits are earned once you complete the podcast episode in full and pass the final assessment.
