CPE requirements for CPAs are set by each of the 55 State Boards of Accountancy, so the exact number of hours and the reporting period depend on where you are licensed. Common patterns include 40 hours per year (for example, Nevada and North Carolina), 80 hours per two-year period (for example, California and Pennsylvania), and 120 hours per three-year period (for example, Ohio and New Jersey), often with an annual minimum such as 20 hours.
Because requirements differ by jurisdiction and may change over time, CPAs are responsible for confirming the current CPE requirements with their state board of accountancy.
Many state boards require ethics-focused CPE as part of license renewal, but the amount and type vary widely by jurisdiction. For example, California requires 4 hours of ethics every 2 years plus a board-approved regulatory review course every 6 years, New Jersey requires 4 hours in New Jersey law and ethics, Ohio requires 3 hours from a board-approved course, and North Carolina requires 1 hour each year.
Check your state board's renewal requirements to confirm how many ethics hours you need and whether a state-specific or board-approved course is required.
State boards generally accept continuing professional education from sponsors registered on NASBA's National Registry of CPE Sponsors, delivered through recognized methods such as group live, group internet based, and QAS self-study.
Courses are classified under NASBA's Fields of Study framework, which distinguishes technical fields (such as Accounting, Auditing, Taxes, Finance, and Regulatory Ethics) from non-technical fields (such as Behavioral Ethics, Business Management and Organization, and Personal Development). Some states set minimums for technical content, so the field of study on your certificate of completion matters.
Yes. NASBA and the AICPA approved a revised Statement on Standards for CPE Programs that took effect on August 1, 2026. The revised standards are principles-based and give sponsors more flexibility in how programs are delivered and measured. The change applies to how CPE programs are developed and documented by sponsors; it does not change the number of hours your state board requires, so your renewal obligations stay with your board's rules.
LumiQ is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) in the U.S. as a CPE sponsor (Sponsor ID: 146039). Courses completed through NASBA-registered sponsors are generally accepted by U.S. boards of accountancy, subject to each state board's specific CPE requirements.
LumiQ's QAS self-study courses span NASBA fields of study including Accounting, Auditing, Taxes, Finance, and Regulatory Ethics, and provide CPE credit hours upon completion. Your certificate of completion documents the course, field of study, and credit hours earned.
Because CPE requirements and acceptance ultimately vary by state and by licensee circumstances, CPAs are responsible for confirming that a specific course meets their state board's renewal requirements.
Podcasts can deliver superior learning outcomes compared to live webinars and recorded webcasts. Audio-only formats reduce cognitive overload and "Zoom fatigue," allowing your brain to retain information better. Additionally, unlike live or in-person options, you can pause and replay complex technical concepts as needed for comprehension.
Podcasts also fit your schedule and your life better. Unlike live webinars with fixed start times, podcasts let you earn CPE during your commute, between clients, or whenever works best.
In short, you get the same credit hours with better retention and zero scheduling conflicts.
CPE credits or hours vary by course. Typically they range from 1 to 2 hours per podcast and 3 to 9 hours for our in-depth, multi-episode learning paths. Each course listing clearly displays the credits you'll earn upon completion. All credits are earned once you complete the podcast episode in full and pass the final assessment.
