Podcast CPE for CPAs: How LumiQ Works
Yes, CPAs can earn CPE by listening to podcasts, provided it is built and delivered as a formal CPE program and accepted under your state board or credentialing body. LumiQ is that model in practice: a NASBA-registered QAS Self Study sponsor (Registry ID 146039) whose 1,200+ episodes each carry learning objectives, chapter questions, a final assessment with a 70 percent pass mark, and a certificate stored in your Tracker.
LumiQ is also registered with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (sponsor ID 010643) and holds a NYSED sponsor agreement (#002996) for self-study ethics. State boards keep final say over which courses, fields of study, and delivery methods count.
How Do You Earn CPE Through a LumiQ Podcast?
1. Choose an Episode
Browse the LumiQ library by topic, field of study, Learning Path, or search. Each episode page shows the topic, learning objectives, CPE credit amount, field of study, and program details before you begin.
LumiQ offers more than 1,200 episodes across accounting, auditing, tax, ethics, fraud, finance, artificial intelligence, technology, internal audit, leadership, Yellow Book, and professional development, with new episodes released weekly.
2. Listen Through the Web or Mobile App
Listen on the LumiQ web platform or the mobile app for iOS or Android, with adjustable playback speed. The audio-first format fits commuting, travelling, walking, exercising, and the other parts of a day that do not suit a video course or a scheduled webinar.
Mobile users can download episodes in advance and listen without Wi-Fi or mobile data.
3. Complete the Chapter Questions
LumiQ episodes include built-in chapter questions that reinforce the material and let you check your understanding as you go. For standard individual U.S. CPE users the chapter questions are optional, but they show you which concepts to revisit and prepare you for the final assessment.
4. Pass the Final Assessment
Complete the final assessment at the end of the course. A score of at least 70 percent is required to pass, and you can retake the assessment as many times as needed. CPE credit is awarded once the course-completion requirements are satisfied and the final assessment is passed.
The 70 percent threshold is not a LumiQ preference. NASBA's Statement on Standards for CPE Programs requires self-study sponsors to issue credit only after a qualified assessment is passed with a cumulative grade of at least 70 percent.
After successful completion, LumiQ automatically generates a certificate of completion.
5. Download Your Certificate from the Tracker
Once earned, your certificate is stored in your LumiQ Tracker for download at any time. It documents the course title, completion date, field of study, delivery method, and total CPE credits.
The Tracker also manages the rest of your professional education. You can filter your credit history, separate LumiQ coursework from outside activities, export your data, and log external learning hours with their supporting certificates.
What Makes a Podcast Eligible for CPE?
An ordinary podcast and structured podcast CPE are not the same thing, and only the second produces legitimate, verifiable CPE.
Ordinary Podcast vs. Structured Podcast CPE:
- Ordinary Podcast: Created primarily for information or entertainment. May not have defined learning objectives. No required participant engagement. No completion verification. No assigned CPE field of study. No certificate of completion. Listening may be professionally useful but is not automatically CPE.
- Structured Podcast CPE : Developed as a formal learning program. Includes measurable learning objectives. Includes questions or other reinforcement tools. Includes a qualified final assessment. Classified within an eligible field of study. Provides formal completion documentation. May earn CPE when completed under the applicable rules.
NASBA defines a formal learning program as one designed and intended as continuing education, with defined learning objectives and compliance with the applicable standards for program quality, engagement, completion verification, measurement, participant communication, and documentation.
A public podcast does not become podcast CPE because it discusses accounting, tax, audit, finance, or business. The program must be developed and completed as qualifying professional education.
Is Podcast CPE Considered Self-Study?
Yes. LumiQ's U.S. podcast CPE is delivered as QAS Self Study, the NASBA format in which a learner completes a self-paced program individually, without real-time interaction with an instructor, and controls the time, place, and pace of the activity. QAS (Quality Assurance Service) sponsors go through NASBA's instructional design review, which includes documenting how each course's credit was measured.
This means LumiQ differs from:
- A live webinar, where learners and an instructor participate at the same time
- An in-person course or conference
- A group internet-based program
- A public podcast with no formal CPE structure
Because LumiQ is self-study, a state's self-study rules may affect how an episode applies to an individual CPA's requirements.
How Is Podcast CPE Credit Calculated?
One CPE credit represents 50 minutes of participation in a formal learning program.
For QAS Self Study, however, credit is not the public episode runtime divided by 50. NASBA's Standards require self-study sponsors to set course value by one of two methods: a pilot test of representative completion time, or the prescribed word count formula, which adds audio duration to 1.85 minutes per review and assessment question, divides by 50, and rounds down.
LumiQ's published calculation follows that model: the time to listen, complete the chapter quizzes, and take the final assessment is added together and divided by 50.
LumiQ sets the CPE value before an episode is published, and the value appears in the episode details and on the completion certificate. The amount on the certificate is the amount to report; do not increase or reduce it based on how quickly or slowly you personally completed the course.
Can I Earn CPE While Listening Offline?
Yes. LumiQ's mobile apps let you download an episode while connected and listen later without Wi-Fi.
Offline listening can be useful during:
- Flights
- Train journeys
- Commuting
- Travel
- Walks or workouts
- Areas with unreliable internet access
Your course remains connected to your LumiQ account, and the final assessment and certificate are handled through the platform.
Do Podcast CPE Credits Count in All 50 States?
Courses from National Registry sponsors are accepted to a certain extent in every U.S. CPA jurisdiction, but individual jurisdictions impose additional requirements.
Those additional rules may address:
- Self-study limits
- QAS Self Study requirements
- Technical or nontechnical subjects
- State-specific ethics
- Board-approved courses
- Sponsor registration
- Annual minimums
- License status
- First-renewal rules
- Reporting periods
LumiQ's National Registry sponsorship does not mean every episode satisfies every requirement for every CPA. A general professional ethics episode may earn valid Regulatory Ethics CPE without replacing a state-specific or Board-approved ethics course, and a leadership episode may count toward nontechnical hours but not a technical-subject requirement.
Review the course details and your state's current rules before relying on an episode for a particular obligation.
Can Podcast CPE Satisfy an Ethics Requirement?
It can, depending on the course and the state.
LumiQ offers professional ethics, regulatory ethics, and behavioral ethics courses, state-specific ethics episodes for Florida, Georgia, New York, Ohio, and Texas, and the California Regulatory Review course for California CPAs.
State ethics rules vary significantly. Before relying on an episode, confirm:
- The type of ethics required
- The number of hours
- Whether the course must address a particular state
- Whether direct Board approval is required
- Whether QAS Self Study is accepted
- Whether the course applies to the correct reporting period
The course page identifies its field of study and applicable jurisdiction. The state board remains the final authority.
What Information Appears on the Certificate?
A LumiQ CPE certificate documents the completed professional education activity. It includes:
- Participant name
- Course title
- Completion date
- CPE credits earned
- Field of study
- Delivery method
- Sponsor information
The certificate provides independent evidence of course completion for the learner's files.
LumiQ certificates are stored in the Tracker, so your learning history and records sit in one place, and you keep access to previously earned certificates after a paid subscription ends.
What Is the LumiQ Tracker?
The LumiQ Tracker is a central place to organize your professional learning records. LumiQ completions and certificates appear automatically, and you can add external learning from another provider, upload the supporting certificate, filter your records, and export your data.
The Tracker is a recordkeeping tool. It does not independently determine whether a course satisfies an individual state, license, or credential requirement.
Why Choose Podcast CPE?
Podcast CPE removes some of the practical friction from professional education. Traditional learning usually needs a scheduled session, a desktop screen, or a dedicated block of time; audio-first learning fits the parts of the day a webcast or video course cannot reach.
LumiQ is built around podcast CPE from the beginning. Episodes are researched, hosted, produced, and engineered for audio rather than repurposed from presentation slides, and they feature CFOs, Big Four partners, regulators, authors, auditors, tax professionals, and other experienced practitioners discussing real decisions, cases, and professional challenges.
Podcast CPE is a strong fit when you:
- Prefer listening to watching
- Want on-demand learning
- Need mobile or offline access
- Learn well through conversations, stories, and case studies
- Want to spread CPE throughout the year
- Find it difficult to set aside additional screen time
It is not the right format for every topic or learner. CPAs who prefer live instructor interaction, detailed written materials, or classroom-style video may combine LumiQ with another provider.
Frequently Asked Questions About Podcast CPE
Can CPAs earn CPE credits by listening to podcasts?
Yes. Podcast CPE is legitimate, verifiable CPE when the podcast is delivered as a qualifying program by a registered sponsor and accepted under the CPA's state rules. An ordinary public podcast does not earn CPE credit on its own.
Is LumiQ registered with NASBA?
Yes. LumiQ is registered on NASBA's National Registry of CPE Sponsors under Registry ID 146039, with QAS Self Study as its approved delivery method.
Is LumiQ podcast CPE live or self-study?
LumiQ podcast CPE is QAS Self Study. Episodes are completed individually and on demand without a real-time instructor.
Are the chapter quizzes required?
No, not for the standard individual U.S. experience. Chapter questions reinforce learning and prepare you for the final assessment, and organization-level settings may add listening or completion controls.
What score do I need on the final assessment?
You need a score of at least 70 percent to pass and earn the course credit.
Can I retake the assessment?
Yes. You can retake the final assessment as many times as needed.
Can I listen without an internet connection?
Yes. Download an episode through the LumiQ mobile app for offline listening.
How many credits is each podcast worth?
The value varies by episode, commonly 1.5 to 3 CPE credits, and is shown in the episode details before you begin. The credit stated on the completion certificate is the amount to report.
Is one podcast hour always equal to one CPE credit?
No. LumiQ assigns each course's value under NASBA's QAS Self Study measurement rules, which count listening time plus the chapter quizzes and final assessment, so the reportable amount is the figure on the certificate, not the published runtime.
Does every LumiQ episode count toward every state requirement?
No. Every state can apply additional rules involving fields of study, ethics, self-study, timing, and course approval. Confirm how a course fits your individual requirement.
Can podcast CPE count toward other professional credentials?
Potentially. Organizations such as The IIA, IMA, ISACA, and ACFE maintain their own continuing education rules. The course must independently satisfy the subject, format, measurement, and documentation requirements of the applicable credentialing body.
